Paid moderation seems to be a more and more popular option lately. My old company, Gannett, has started using paid moderation on some sites. We used it back at the Cincinnati Enquirer for our Moms site. There are engaged members of the community who like being more involved in the process - and if it pays a little bit of money, all the better.

I think paid moderators are the way to go. I'm sure there are many stay-at-home moms/dads who have a certain amount of free time - some might even be former journalists or people with journalism/communications degrees but don't want full time employment. They would be great moderators. I'm also sure with a small amount of training, nearly anyone with even a small amount of post secondary schooling and maturity can be trained to moderate comments. The pay could be by the hour - work when you want to. They could also employ a small number of full-time moderators too. They can run the training and moderate the moderators.
